Conservative Tactic # 7
Liberals want Handouts...
First of all… no. Secondly, are you serious, you realize that people have google and stuff now right? Conservatives try very hard to brand liberals as lazy slackers who want government handouts the same way guys who drive big trucks want you to believe they have big penises. In both cases the truth of the matter is most assuredly opposite.
The laziest person I know is an individual that is white, ultra-conservative, devoutly religious, and obtuse (not that the last two things are related are anything). The only person that I’ve met lazier than this was their late spouse, who overdosed from a drug habit supported entirely from government and disability programs. I’m all for ultra small minded conservatives committing suicide, just not by way of social aid, I’d much rather see that money go to individuals who are trying to improve their situation and station in life.
Newt Gingrich, has spent more than 30 years demonizing government spending, but most of all welfare. In the midst of all this scrutiny old Newt was giving (that means spending) more federal money to his home district of Cobb County, GA than any other suburban county in the country (with the exception of Arlington, VA an extension of the Federal Gov. and Brevard, FL home of Kennedy Space Center). Newt spent the 90’s attempting to decimate the social safety net all together. He advocated ending unemployment insurance, taking away aid from needy families, and my personal favorite, forcibly placing children of teen moms in orphanages… which would make that show on Mtv much more interesting. Newt campaigned to end entitlement spending while giving huge amounts of federal aid to a county that’s by far one of the wealthiest in the south.
Subsidies = Government Spending
“The welfare debate reveals similar confusions. The same people who believe that the government should help the poor oppose welfare. Few are aware that the Pentagon system is largely a welfare system for the rich, catering to welfare freaks like Newt Gingrich, who brings more federal subsidies to his district than any other suburban county outside the federal system itself while his wealthy constituents self-righteously denounce the nanny state and commentators admire the entrepreneurial values of people who know only how to feed at the public trough. Nor are many aware that the Pentagon system was established in explicit recognition that high-tech industry could not survive in a competitive, unsubsidized, `free enterprise' economy, and that the private sector has relied extensively on such subsidy, including advanced technology readily transferred to commercial use…” - Noam Chomsky
The U.S. gives way more money to large corporations than they distribute in welfare aid. Hell, we subsidize the most profitable industry on earth…Oil. Beyond that, our country gives money to the wealthiest citizens by way of tax breaks and loop holes. We give over $400 Billion a year to corporations and the rich in the form of tax breaks and expenditures. This Corporate Welfare grossly outweighs the less than $120 Billion the government spends on programs for the poor.
I love job creators, don’t you? Presidential candidate Mitt Romney enjoys just such a break on his $20 Million per year income paying only around a 14% tax rate. This is due to the shamefully low capital gains tax in this country that encourages the rich to place the majority of their money in investments rather than actually investing in something tangible like a business that produces a good or service (that’s how you create jobs by the way) because whatever monies they receive from that business will be taxed at a higher rate (the rate everyone 98% of us pay) than just leaving it in Merrill Lynch for safe keeping.
Look, we all need to know, except, and agree that everyone wants free money. It’s just that some people are a little more deserving of it than others.
